Terminology

​The following section details a few common terms and artefacts used with the TEL function and Blackboard.

TERM DEFINITION

ADAPTIVE RELEASE

The setting which allows Instructors to control the release of content, tests, assignments or any other learning material according to specific time and/or data requirements.

BREADCRUMB

The navigation tool which allows Blackboard users to backtrack their 'trail' through the Blackboard system. Appears in the top left of the action bar of any system page i.e. Groups > Discussions > Virtual Classroom

CONTENT

This can be any form of material, assignments, media, tests that are used to provide online instruction, measure results and transfer knowledge.

COURSE

A planned, subject specific, unit of study and assessment i.e. Marketing, Accounting, Financial Management

EDIT MODE

A toggle switch which enables an instructor to quickly switch to a students view of a course. Located at the top right view of any COURSE page. Note EDIT MODE must be ON to change any courses elements.

GLOBAL NAVIGATION MENU

Located at the top right of any screen view in Blackboard, this context menu provides a quick link to popular course areas such as Grades, Posts, Messages and the course calendar

GRADE CENTRE

The central repository for student assessment results and information. Results can be entered, modified and finalized in this section of Blackboard.

PROGRAMME

A fully contained learning process that is made of a number of COURSES i.e. MBA, PMD, Total MDP

RUBRIC

A tool used to list evaluation criteria for an assignment, test or assessment. Rubrics can be associated with any form of assessment so students can clearly see how their submission will be graded.
