Become an expert in strategy.

The newly introduced MPhil in Corporate Strategy is an academically rigorous degree that will enable you to transform from a traditional business manager into a specialist in the complexities of designing, implementing and adapting corporate strategy. The programme is completed in 18 months of part-time study in a format that allows you to minimise time away from the office.

This programme is aimed at managers with relevant experience in strategic processes who have completed a four-year degree, an honours degree or an equivalent qualification. Applicants should have at least 10 years' working experience.

The course consists of specialist core subjects, electives and a research project. It will equip you with high-level business skills in the areas of strategic foresight, strategic management and strategic leadership. Successful completion of this degree, which includes a significant research component, may enable progression to a PhD focused on research in corporate strategy.

Key focus areas

The following core courses are covered in year one:  (May - November 2020)

  • Strategic management;
  • Strategic foresight;
  • Strategic leadership; and
  • Environment of business.

Requirements during year two:  (Jan - November 2021)

  • Introduction to research methodology - culminates in your research proposal (supported by research workshops);
  • You will need to select four electives from the 40 offered on the MBA programme based on your areas of interest; and
  • A research report in the area of strategy (hand in early November 2020).

Registration fee: R17 000 (non-refundable, payable on acceptance to the programme offset against total tuition fees)

Administration fee for students from countries outside South Africa: R5 000

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of an Honours degree or equivalent (NQF 8) in Business/Business related field/Professional qualification cognate to this degree such as a 4 year degree in Engineering or Law;
  • Minimum 10 years business experience preferably;
  • GIBS Entrance test or GMAT if non-degreed (min score 550);

Applicants who hold a foreign qualification need to send their qualifications to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) for evaluation before applying to GIBS. This master’s degree is aimed at business managers and leaders who want to develop a deep knowledge of corporate strategy – which lies at the heart of all organisational success. The MPhil Corporate Strategy is a specialised, academically rigorous degree that will enable you to transform from a traditional business manager into a specialist in the complexities of designing, implementing and adapting corporate strategy.  You will be able to conduct advanced research into corporate strategy, leading to you being an expert in your area of research.  

How you will benefit

Through a wide range of case studies and exposure to business leaders you will be able to see the applicability of the academic material covered of the courses. You will participate in a large scale, team-based project studying an industry through the viewpoint of both a dominant player as well as a disruptor in that industry, applying your learnings from each of the four core courses.
