Dear Students

As per previous communication, we had hoped to start the 2022 academic year on campus in January. Unfortunately owing to the current COVID-19 4th wave, we have had to reconsider our plans.

The current situation is that, while restrictions have not as yet been amended, should any class member test positive after attending class on campus, the entire class will have to go into self-quarantine in terms of NICD requirements. With a test positivity rate currently running at around 30%, and continued uncertainty as to the progression of the wave, it is almost inevitable that this will occur,

This scenario would entail substantial disruption, not only for classes and learning, but for all of you in your professional and personal lives. Therefore, and in order to exercise an abundance of caution for everyone's health and wellbeing, we have decided to commence the 2022 academic year online, for at least the month of January. Having taught online for the past two years, we are very well equipped to do so, and confident that your learning experience will be at the excellent GIBS standard that you expect. Your programme management team will be in touch to confirm arrangements.

As soon as COVID-conditions allow, we will make arrangements to return to class on campus. We will give due notice of such arrangements.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate pandemic conditions.

With best wishes for a safe and happy holiday period, for you and your loved ones,

Louise Whittaker Interim Deputy Dean

Dear GIBS Students

I am confident you will have seen the media and other reports of Omicron, the latest Covid co-variant. Nothing focuses the mind quite like the President calling an urgent 'family meeting' on a Sunday night. At present the lockdown levels remain unchanged as the threat or otherwise of the variant is determined.

The campus, including the Info Centre and Mookana, remains open and programme arrangements for 2022 (as laid out in my letter dated 25 November) remain unchanged. Should there be any amendment to these arrangements as a result of changes to lockdown levels or further developments in the 4th wave, I will be in touch.

It is worth taking a leaf out of the President's book and reinforcing the precautions required to avoid being infected by the Covid virus.

  • Get vaccinated. Encourage all those with whom you are in contact, to also get vaccinated.
  • Ensure there is good air quality whenever you are in the company of others. Ideally, meet outside, and if you need to congregate inside, do so in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear your mask whenever you are out. Wear it correctly over both your nose and mouth.
  • Keep social distance. No exceptions.
  • Wash your hands regularly. Alternatively, sanitise.
  • Avoid events involving large numbers of people ('super spreader events'), especially indoors. If possible, limit contact outside your 'family bubble'.

A reminder of precautions specific to the GIBS Campus:

  • GIBS requires everyone on campus to either be vaccinated, provide a negative PCR test less than 72 hours old, or supply a doctor's note indicating they have recently had Covid and therefore cannot be vaccinated at this point.
  • Everyone is to complete the Higher Health App prior to coming onto campus.
  • All student access is managed via Access@gibs.co.za.
  • All classrooms and venues will be utilised at before 50% capacity.
  • Buffet-style lunches are being served, with suitable sanitation before and after serving.

May I strongly urge you, should you be feeling unwell in any way at all, not to come onto campus, for the health and safety of the GIBS community.

These remain difficult times. Stay strong, stay vigilant. We will get through this together.

Dear GIBS Students

As the third wave abates and the lockdown level eases, we look forward to your return to the GIBS campus. We continue to proceed with an abundance of caution to ensure our learning environment is compliant with all COVID-19 protocols and as safe as possible.

In line with Consolidated Direction on Occupational Health and Safety Measures in Certain Workplaces (Regulation 4(10) of the national disaster regulation), that was issued by the Department of Labour in May 2021, all GIBS staff and service providers are required to have had at least one vaccination before being permitted onto campus. Those who have not had such a vaccination are required to provide a negative PCR test before every visit. This not only demonstrates our commitment to ensuring our people are safe from the risks of COVID-19, but also offers assurances to you as our students that we have done everything possible to ensure your safety.
The results of the student survey conducted this week show that most students are happy to return to campus.  More than 75% of both the staff and student bodies have already had at least one vaccination.

In accordance with our commitment to safety and the student survey results, from 15 October, students wishing to attend class on campus will be required to present a vaccination card (showing at least one vaccination) upon entry. For those who are not vaccinated because they have recently had COVID-19 and who wish to attend classes in person, a doctor’s exemption certificate may be shown.  Students who are not vaccinated and without such a certificate will be required to show a valid negative COVID-19 PCR test result.

For students who do not wish to fulfill these requirements, or despite the precautions outlined here, still feel reluctant to attend classes on campus, hybrid teaching will continue for the rest of 2021.
MBA Students who elected to attend the on-campus activation for the Global Module, but will now choose not to attend, will be credited with the cost of R545 into their GIBS account, provided they notify Shirlene Smits by the 8th October 2021.

All other protocols remain unchanged:

Students will still be required to complete a Higher Health wellbeing assessment and present confirmation that they are low risk to the GIBS Health Ambassadors stationed at campus entrances.
To apply for access outside of class attendance, contact access@gibs.co.za

All syndicate and meeting rooms have the maximum capacity posted at their entrances to ensure that occupants can maintain appropriate social distancing.

Masks are mandatory at all times on campus. Please ensure your mask covers your entire nose and mouth at all times.

Please conform rigorously to all safety protocols -  not only for your safety but other's protection as well.

Stay safe.

South Africa has now moved out of the third wave of Covid 19, with case numbers, especially in Gauteng, dropping substantially. Many within the GIBS community have now received vaccinations.

As a consequence we have amended our on-campus policies:

  • The GIBS information centre and Mookana Grab and Go are now open.
  • Third parties are now permitted on campus.
  • Where students require access to campus to attend lectures or access WiFi, such access continues to be strictly controlled. All visitors will still be required to complete a Higher Health wellbeing assessment and present confirmation that they are low risk, to the GIBS Health Ambassadors stationed at campus entrances.
To apply for access, contact access@gibs.co.za
  • All syndicate and meeting rooms have the maximum capacity posted at their entrances to ensure that occupants can maintain appropriate social distancing.
  • Masks are mandatory at all times on campus. Please ensure your mask covers your entire nose and mouth at all times.
  • GIBS staff continue to work from home for the majority of the working week. In the instance where staff work on campus, they are required to have been vaccinated or provide a valid negative Covid 19 PCR test as well as complete the  Higher Health wellbeing assessment each time they enter campus.

Please conform rigorously to all safety protocols -  not only your safety but other's protection as well.

Stay safe.

South Africa has now entered the third wave of Covid 19, with case numbers, especially in Gauteng, increasing dramatically. While the official lockdown level has not yet been adjusted, we need to act quickly and with an abundance of caution to protect the health and wellbeing of our students, faculty, staff and the broader GIBS community. To this end, and in line with the University of Pretoria's approach, we are instituting the following measures:

  • All programmes will be conducted online until further notice. There will be no face-to-face classes on campus.
  • The GIBS information centre and Mookana Grab and Go are to be closed.
  • No third parties are permitted on campus.
  • Where students require access to campus for WiFi, such access continues to be strictly controlled. All visitors will still be required to complete a Higher Health wellbeing assessment and present confirmation that they are low risk to the GIBS Health Ambassadors stationed at campus entrances.
  • GIBS staff continue to work from home unless it is absolutely essential that they be on campus to fulfil their duties. In the instance where staff have to be on campus, the Higher Health wellbeing assessment continues to be a requirement.
I strongly discourage anyone from coming to campus unless absolutely necessary, as it increases the risk of transmission. It appears that the later Covid variants are particularly contagious. For those for whom it is absolutely critical to come to campus, please conform rigorously to all safety protocols -  not only your safety but other's protection as well.

Now more than ever, we need to remain vigilant and not be complacent.  Stay safe.

Implications of moving to Covid Lock-down level two.

President Ramaphosa recently announced that to curb the acceleration of Covid infections into a “third wave”, lock-down restrictions have, effective 31 May, been increased to level two. The most significant change is that the curfew is now in effect from 10 PM and 4 AM. Consequently, the GIBS campus will not be accessible by anyone between these hours.

All other on-campus protocols will remain unchanged:
Most programmes are currently being presented online, without the need to for students to attend on campus.
In the instance where classes are held on campus, they will remain strictly within regulations - namely, the lesser of 100 persons or 50% of the standard seating capacity of the facility. All classes are managed to maintain the required 1.5 metres social distancing at all times.
Where students require access for on-campus classes or access to WiFi, such access continues to be strictly controlled. All visitors will still be required to complete a Higher Health wellbeing assessment and present confirmation that they are low risk to the GIBS Health Ambassadors stationed at campus entrances.
Students wishing to avail themselves of on-campus WiFi are still required to book a syndicate room in advance with the venues team: access@gibs.co.za
o All syndicate and meeting rooms have the maximum capacity posted at their entrances to ensure that occupants can maintain appropriate social distancing.
Masks are mandatory at all times on campus except when eating and drinking. Please ensure your mask covers your entire nose and mouth.
o For the absence of doubt, students must remain wearing masks throughout lectures.
Eating and drinking may only take place in designated eating and drinking spaces and is not permitted in classrooms and syndicate rooms.
GIBS staff continue to work from home unless it is essential that they be on campus to fulfil their duties. In the instance where staff have to be on campus, the Higher Health wellbeing assessment is to be completed as before.

I urge you all to maintain all necessary precautions to keep safe and prevent the spread of Covid. Many counties worldwide, even those that have high inoculation rates, have suffered a significant acceleration of cases under a third wave scenario. Now is not the time to be complacent and let our vigilance slip.
Stay safe.

Dear Student

As we emerge from the COVID-19 second wave, we are pleased to be able to return to campus. We must, however, remain vigilant to ensure our GIBS community stays safe. In light of the easing of restrictions, and lower case-count across the country, the GIBS Interim Dean and Exco have implemented the following measures from 1 March 2021.

• All part-time and modular academic programmes will be delivered on campus according to the schedule as communicated by your programme manager. These programmes will also be delivered simultaneously by Zoom, should any student not be able to attend in person.
• Programme Managers will arrange access to the campus for you on the days on which you have scheduled classes.
Students who intend to come to campus outside of scheduled classes are still required to obtain permission from access@gibs.co.za before arrival.
• The Information Centre is open. Staff will be available on campus to assist students with research.
• The "Grab and Go" is open, and lunches will once again be served as plated meals.
• The number of people permitted to occupy an on-campus venue remains restricted to a maximum of 50% of standard capacity. Students will be accommodated in venues sufficiently large to fulfil this safety regulation.
• For those on campus, strict adherence to the mask policy will be enforced. You are reminded that you are required to wear a mask while in the presence of any other person while on campus. This is in line with the law.

These measures, while inconvenient, are essential to ensure the health and wellbeing of everyone in our community.

Stay safe.

Changes to coming onto campus in line with level 3 regulations.

Dear Student

I hope you are all safe, healthy and well in these extremely difficult and trying times. While we all look forward to the fresh start which the new year offers, we need to remain vigilant to ensure our GIBS community stays safe. With the announcement of new Covid strains and a significant  increase in the numbers of active cases throughout the country, the risk of infection has escalated. As President Ramaphosa highlighted in his recent address, we all have a duty to keep both ourselves and our fellow South Africans safe. In light of the present circumstances  and with an abundance of caution, the GIBS Interim Dean and Exco have implemented the following measures for January 2020 and thereafter until Covid lockdown levels are relaxed:

• The number of staff and students on campus will be minimised.
• All part time and modular academic programmes will be delivered entirely online.
• Students who have a specific need to come onto campus are required to obtain permission from access@gibs.co.za prior to arival.
• The Information Centre will close. However the staff remain available to assist with your research requirements.  Contact details here.
• The coffee shop will again be closed, and where meals are required on campus, they will be served in individual sealed units.
• For those who are permitted on campus, strict adherence to the mask policy will be enforced. You are reminded that you are required to wear a mask while in the presence of any other person while on campus. This is in line with law.
• Only essential staff will operate from the campus, all other GIBS faculty and staff will work from home.

We will review these measures throughout January and amend them as required, as the impact of the second wave of the pandemic unfolds.
I trust you understand that these measures, while inconvenient are essential to ensure the health and wellbeing of everyone in our community.
Let us remember the proverb: However long the night may last, there will be a morning.
Stay safe.

Rules of engagement – COVID-19 Level One

Principles underlying our actions to ensure the GIBS campus remains safe:

  • Access to the campus still requires preregistration.
  • Everyone is required to wear masks at all times, except when eating.
  • Everyone is required to keep a 2 metre social distance from others at all times.
  • Everyone is required to sanitise regularly, and practice all other healthy hygiene habits and Covid-19 protocols to keep each other safe.

Details:

  • Students are to continue to use the Melville Road entrance and park as directed by security. They are then to please proceed through the Covid -19 screening at the main entrance to the campus. Please allow time for screening ahead of your lecture.
  • Whilst the regulations allow 100% of students to be back on campus, in order to align to the principle of maintaining a 2 metre distance at all times (and exercising an abundance of caution) and to comply with the current  50% venue occupancy regulation, GIBS will not be able to accommodate more than 40 students in its largest venues (except the auditorium) at any one time.
  • Programme managers will notify students in good time when their course will be held on campus. Students who cannot attend on campus will continue to be accommodated with livestreaming of the lecture.
  • All venues will have a notice at the door specifying the maximum occupancy rate for the venue. Programme Managers  (PMs) will ensuring that occupancy does not exceed the designate venue occupancy rate.
  • Programme Managers will also ensure standards of on campus health and hygiene and associated Covid-19 protocols are adhered to by all students and others on campus.
  • PMs will continue to register the names of students, faculty, guest speakers and programme staff and the dates on which they will need to access campus.
  • Students will no longer be issued with permits to travel to campus as they are  no longer necessary. However, all students will still be required to be registered by programme managers  or apply for access to come onto campus. This is to ensure we do not exceed safe the safe capacity of specific venues and the campus as a whole.
  • Students wishing to utilize the new Info centre should apply for access here: access@gibs.co.za.
  • Weather and space permitting, syndicate work can take place outside providing students maintain a 2 metre distance and wear their masks. Syndicate rooms can only accommodate two to four students simultaneously. Should students require syndicate rooms they may apply for such here: access@gibs.co.za For sanitary reasons unbooked syndicate rooms will remain locked.
  • As students may now return to campus, the Drive by Wi-Fi has been discontinued.
