Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) opens applications for financial journalism training

Applications are currently being accepted for the fourth intake of the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) Financial Journalism Training Program. Since 2015, more than 400 delegates in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya have completed the financial journalism training.

The six-month certificate program, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, with additional support from the Ford Foundation offers African journalists and mid-career professionals in business, government and civil society the opportunity to strengthen their skills in capital markets and data analysis and enhance their knowledge in public policy and financial and economic reporting.

"We, at GIBS, are delighted to be in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Ford Foundation and preeminent universities on the African continent in the delivery of the BMIA Financial Journalism Training Program. As applications for the 4th intake continue to stream in, we remain committed to adding value and contributing to enhanced financial and economic reporting that is robust and highlights the importance of good governance," says Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) Dean: Professor Nicola Kleyn.

The University of Pretoria's GIBS together with leading faculty from the Rhodes University's School of Journalism and Media Studies in South Africa; the University of Lagos Department of Mass Communication and Broadcasting, and the Lagos Business School in Nigeria; the University of Nairobi's School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and Strathmore Business School in Kenya, deliver this unique multidisciplinary training program. In addition to course material centered around seven core modules, students receive training on the Bloomberg Terminal, and access to leading practitioners in the fields of media, business, technology and government. The online curriculum and syndicate assignments supplement 19-days of in-class instruction.

"As the African Media Initiative we have been incubating ideas and supporting programs that are helping redefine the African media landscape, including promoting ethics in journalism, quality content production and building a more informed citizenry.  The BMIA financial journalism program provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the work of media professionals on the continent to promote the development agenda of Africa," says Eric Chinje, Chief Executive Officer, African Media Initiative.
