AACSB International Recognises GIBS for Innovation in Leadership Development

In response to rapid global change, business schools are no longer educating students about the ways of the world, they are educating them for a world that does not yet exist. Bold and innovative approaches to leadership development are key to their success. AACSB International – the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) recognised University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) among 30 global institutions who are defining what it means to lead in the face of uncertainty and cultivating that winning skillset in the next generation of business leaders.

The third annual Innovations That Inspire Challenge recognises institutions from around the world serving as champions of change in the business education landscape, with a specific focus on innovation in leadership development, a key pillar of the accreditation process and one of five opportunities identified in the Collective Vision for business education.

GIBS was recognised for the Ethics and Governance Think Tank, under the category of Strengthening the Understanding of Effective Leadership Development, highlighting how business schools are partnering with industry to gather data-driven insights on the most effective leadership practices and approaches. The Think Tank is a platform that explores and influences how South African business can follow a more ethical approach, thereby building trust and helping to secure a more successful, sustainable future for the business community and the country.

“The biggest risk to business schools is not the rapid pace of change. It is in failing to prepare the next generation of business leaders to cope with that change,” said Thomas R. Robinson, president and CEO of AACSB. “Through its best-in-class leadership development program the Gordon Institute of Business Science Ethics and Governance Think Tank, is ensuring that the business leaders of tomorrow will be ready for whatever lies ahead.”

Director of the Ethics Think Tank, Rabbi Gideon Pogrund said, “We are honoured and delighted that the GIBS Ethics and Governance Think Tank has been recognised by such a prestigious body. It affirms the value and importance of the work we are doing in helping address the challenges currently faced by South African business and society.”

The Think Tank has established itself as a pre-eminent platform for a national conversation about business ethics. This has been achieved via a series of public forums featuring influential South African thought leaders. The platform also convenes and facilitates private dialogue forums between senior leaders from business and diverse societal stakeholders.
