GIBS hosted the first 27dinner event of 2014

On Monday, 27 January, the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) hosted the first 27dinner event of 2014. The 27dinner movement, brought to you by Cerebra, aims to bring together informed, networked individuals with a common passion for technology, media and business in an informal but valuable real world space. The events have been running since January 2006 and have become a powerful platform for connecting people with the intention of sparking innovation and new business opportunities. A new year calls for change and this year the 27dinner movement will be hosted by GIBS and sponsored by Telkom Business.

The evening kicked off with an introduction from Cerebra CEO, Mike Stopforth and a few words from Johann Henning, MD of Telkom Business who highlighted Telkom’s commitment to endorsing innovation and creativity in South Africa.

Ronnie Apteker gave the first presentation of the evening. Ronnie is an entrepreneur at heart and is currently focused on a host of online initiatives. He has also been involved in 15 film productions over the past 14 years, the last one being “Material”. In his presentation, Ronnie covered the business of storytelling and discussed his colourful journey as an artist, writer and entrepreneur. He spoke about how three key elements namely: tenacity, hard work and luck are key to finding entrepreneurial success.

The second and final presentation of the night was by Kali Llunga, a 27 year old mobile entrepreneur. He founded Spoken Ink 8 years ago, a company that was voted into South Africa's top fast growth companies by the All World network. He is currently the founder and CEO of SeeSayDo, a New York based start-up launching in SA with support from DSTV. Kali provided insights on what makes a good idea custodian (in a world full of good ideas) and how entrepreneurs can take their idea to the next level by getting global funding and traction. He highlighted the importance of finding a strategic partner, “find someone who loves your idea enough to boost you”, says Kali. According to Kali, the best way to get a strategic partner’s attention is disruption, a disruptive idea is one that can drastically cut the client’s costs and improve the end-user experience. Kali ended off by highlighting the importance of confidence – “believing in your idea is the best way to give your pitch credibility”.
