Professor Adrian Saville in discussion with Lorenzo Fioramonti about success in a world without growth.

While politicians scramble to create jobs out of thin air and businessmen pretend things can continue as normal, it has become increasingly clear that economic growth is disappearing around the world. Consumption has reached its limits in the so-called developed world, with fewer buyers for the commodities and goods exported by 'developing' countries. Energy is running out and global agreements to fight climate change pose an additional challenge to the status quo.

The good news is that, as we begin to recognise the end of growth as a reality, it also becomes the dawn of a new society, which pursues wellbeing as the ultimate objective of progress. South Africa sits at the crossroads of a historic transition. It can take a leap and prosper as a wellbeing society or condemn itself to an escalation of inequality and destruction due to the blind pursuit of ever-more-fading growth.

Prof Lorenzo Fioramonti is Associate Professor of Political Science and Jean Monnet Chair in Regional Integration and Governance Studies at the University of Pretoria (South Africa), where he directs the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (

He is also Senior Fellow at the Centre for Social Investment of the University of Heidelberg and at the Hertie School of Governance (Germany) and Associate Fellow at the United Nations University Comparative Regional Integration Studies (Belgium). He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative and European Politics and has published over 50 scientific articles in international journals such as Development in Practice, Development Dialogue, European Foreign Affairs Review, Third World Quarterly, The Journal of Civil Society,  andThe International Spectator to name but a few. He has coordinated the activities of three research groups within the prestigious EU FP7 programme and received funding from a number of sources, which include the European Commission, the European Union Delegation to South Africa, the SA Department of Science and Technology, the Flemish Government, the Italian Ministry of International Affairs, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Heinrich Boll Foundation, and the Compagnia di San Paolo.

In his 15 years of academic experience, Prof. Fioramonti has been able to build a significant research network with some of the most prestigious universities in the world. While his thematic focus was initially confined to democratization studies, he gradually expanded it to also include the role that supranational institutions play in fostering democracy, development and social cohesion. His current research focuses on governance processes and innovations, in particular regional integration, bottom-up citizen-driven change and global ‘crises’, including environmental degradation and climate change.
