Using Design Strategy to Unlock Value in Uncertain Times

This forum unpacks how to use design strategy to create social impact and commercial value in 2019 and beyond.

Many companies have made some form of investment in building a design capability but struggle to unlock value both immediately and over the long-term. According to the Design Management Institute, when design principles are applied to strategy and innovation, the success rate for innovation dramatically improves. Design-led companies such as Apple, Coca-Cola, IBM, Nike, Procter & Gamble, and Whirlpool have outperformed the S&P 500 over the past 10 years by an extraordinary 219%. This forum will share valuable insights and practical tools to identify and design for underserved segments and unmet needs.

What we will cover:

Moving from design thinking to design doing;

Landing design at scale in established enterprises; 

Reverse innovation and other practical ways to unlock commercial benefit; and

So many tools, so little time – choosing the right tool for the job.  


Terry Behan combines a strong background in innovation, strategy, and design. He manages and leads agile design teams that deliver innovative social and commercial solutions that seek to address the challenges of our time. He works across the USA, Africa, India, and the Middle East.  His design portfolio includes projects in online education, neuroscience, financial inclusivity, online retail, as well as AI & IoT. He holds an MSc in design strategy and management from Parsons School of Art and Design, currently rated the top design school in North America. Terry is also a GIBS faculty member, focusing on innovation and design.

  • Prof Manoj Chiba is a management professional & has held senior positions in different sectors, with a deep technical expertise in data and technology, with over 14 years of experience. This experience has allowed him to draw on the relevant understanding to exploit opportunities & align strategies.  

    Prof Chiba's training, qualifications & passion for data & the intersection with technology drive his underlying philosophy for evidence-based decision-making and the impact on the future of business and society. Some of his work includes Data Science, serving as a data scientist; building data science capabilities and operationalising this capability sustainably within organisations of different sizes; strategy and structure consulting work; price-setting strategies for organisations; market share analysis; SME for legal cases and innovation consulting.  

    Prof Chiba has consulted to over 65 companies locally and globally, with hands-on experience in over 10 African countries and serves as a non-executive director for two organisations. He also has a deep passion and spends a considerable time working with youth, education, and developing the youth in South Africa.  

    At GIBS Prof Chiba is a Senior Lecturer and Faculty member, lecturing research, statistics, predictive analytics, digitisation, intersection of business, society and technology, artificial intelligence and lead faculty for innovation and design. He also supervises MBA and PhD theses in the fields of: International business strategy and structure; Data and strategy; Digital Business models; and innovation. Prof Chiba is also a reviewer for: European Business Reviewer; South African Journal of Business Management and Emerald Case Publishing. Furthermore, he is an external examiner for numerous Universities across undergraduate and post-graduate courses and theses, locally and globally.
