The SA gold industry is going through significant turmoil at the moment which will inevitably impact on the way these mines will be structured in future. Amid challenging market and financial conditions, complex stakeholder relations and low gold prices it has become more complex to manage a gold mine. Nevertheless the global gold mining sector remains relevant, particularly so for emerging countries with a high resource dependency. Nick Holland, CEO of Gold Fields, takes a look at the "Gold Mine of the Future" and how this mine has to be positioned, structured, managed and organised to prosper in a difficult market environment. This goes beyond the mechanisation and innovation required to operate a mine of the future; he also looks at the possible organisation and ownership of a future mine, the skills and leadership needed to run such a mine and the relationships with stakeholders – investors, employees, communities and governments – required to ensure that this mine is sustainable. He will also provide some insights on Gold Fields' journey on this path to date, with some successes to report but also many lessons learned.
