In Conversation with Redi Thlabi, Mark Heywood and Peter Hain

Professor Nick Binedell chats to Redi Thlabi, former Radio 702 presenter and author of Khwezi; Mark Heywood, Executive Director of SECTION27 and a key figure in #SaveSouthAfrica, #UniteAgainstCorruption; and Lord Peter Hain, leader of the Anti-Apartheid Movement and the Anti-Nazi League in Britain about protecting our constitution.

Lord Peter Hain

Labour MP for Neath between 1991 and 2015, Peter Hain was a senior minister for twelve years in Tony Blair and Gordon Brown’s governments, where he served as Secretary of State for Wales and Northern Ireland, as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and as Leader of the Commons. He was also Europe Minister, Foreign Minister and Energy Minister. He chaired the UN Security Council, and negotiated international Treaties curbing nuclear proliferation and banning the conflict-inducing trade in blood diamonds.

Peter Hain’s childhood was spent in apartheid South Africa, a period that came to an end when his parents were forced into exile in 1966.

A during the 1970s and 1980s, he obtained degrees at Queen Mary College, London, and Sussex University.

Over nearly 50 years in politics Hain has written or edited twenty-one books – including his biography Mandela (2010), memoirs Outside In (2012), Ad & Wal: values, duty, sacrifice in apartheid South Africa (2014), and Back to the Future of Socialism (2015).  He is also the author of numerous pamphlets and media articles, and has appeared widely on radio and television, as well as being an experienced public speaker.

Mark Heywood

Mark Heywood is a leading voice in the current political crisis in South Africa. He heads Section27, a human rights organisation based in Johannesburg, and is a key figure in the Save South Africa campaign. He was a keynote speaker at the Daily Maverick's The Gathering in 2015 and 2016, and the first stand-in for Redi Tlhabi on Radio 702.

Outspoken activist Mark Heywood, widely known for spearheading remarkable victories for justness in South Africa, is a leading voice in the current political crisis. As founder member of TAC and director of Section 27, he has been intimately involved in some of the biggest political battles of the recent era, from forcing the government to provide treatment to HIV-positive patients to exposing the text-book crisis in Limpopo. Heywood's critical yet inspirational opinion pieces often appear in the Daily Maverick and Mail & Guardian, amongst others. He is an influential thought leader regularly featured on Radio 702.

Redi Thlabi

Redi is a Johannesburg talk show radio host, broadcast journalist, and author. 

Tlhabi was born in 1978. She graduated from college with degrees in Political Economy and English Literature. When she's not studying, presenting radio or TV show, she reads extensively and runs marathons.  Tlhabi won the prestigious Sunday Times Alan Paton Award in 2013.

    Nick Binedell is the Founding Director and Sasol Chair of Strategic Management of the Gordon Institute of Business Science, a Business School situated in Illovo, Johannesburg and established in January 2000, by the University of Pretoria.

    After an initial career in the industry in the Mining and Manufacturing sectors in sales and general management in the Barlow Rand Group, Nick has focused his career for the past 20 years in the area of business education.

    In 1998 he was invited to establish a new business school focused on meeting the individual and corporate needs of business in South Africa.

    The school has rapidly established itself as a leading business school in South Africa with a strong focus on partnering with leading South African corporates and providing a high level of local and international business education. It was recently ranked as one of the top 40 global executive education providers by the London Financial Times.

    Nick is a determined traveler and explorer. His earlier roots included extensive travel and by the time he was ten he had lived in Zimbabwe, Germany, Yemen, Kenya, South Africa and Britain. He has spent five years in the United States and in the past three years has traveled to Sydney, Shanghai, Dubai, Prague, Budapest, Lagos as well as European and American cities.

    His area of expertise is in the field of business strategy formulation and his academic and consulting work, although dominantly in South Africa, includes work in the United States, Europe and Australia.
