Supervisor Masterclass

Concerned about booking for an Event or Course because of the Coronavirus?

The programme, which begins on Wednesday 29 September 2021, comprises weekly online hour-long masterclasses in the late afternoon. There will be ten sessions in 2022, and ten further sessions in the first half of 2022.

We are especially delighted to announce that the masterclasses will be led by Prof Mark Saunders, one of the authors of the most influential business school books Research methods for business students (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/business/news/2021/birmingham-academic's-book-labelled-'the-most-influential-title-in-the-business-school-world'-according-to-the-ft.aspx). He will be supported by Prof Helena Barnard and Dr Viv Spooner from GIBS.

The masterclasses are designed to build a community of supervisors and to deepen both research and supervisory skills, drawing on the experiences of the master class participants.

The programme was designed with the busy schedule of academics in mind. Sessions are offered online and are only one hour a week. Moreover, although preparation documents must be submitted, they have been designed to be short - no more than one page for each session.

Funding for this project has been made available through a DHET / British Council grant to GIBS and so no fees are payable by the participants. Appropriate books by Prof Saunders are prescribed, and are included as part of the masterclasses. However, in order to qualify for a certificate of attendance, participants will need to have attended at least 80% of the sessions and have submitted at least 80% of the preparation documents for the sessions.

Because this is a masterclass, applicants need to have a doctoral degree, and must have experience supervising students at the Masters and/or Doctoral level. They need to be employed
