NHBRC Women Empowerment

The NHBRC 2021/22 Women Empowerment Programme, delivered in partnership with Gordon Institute of Business Science, will be launched in March 2021. The programme is 24 months in duration. 


This programme consists of the following:
- 12 months of business management training delivered by leading faculty and industry specialists
- Support services including, mentorship, coaching and additional practical workshops
- Interactive engagements with sector experts and guest speakers
- An additional 12 months of support with networking opportunities, mentorship and coaching sessions

The programme will run in the following regions:

  • Gauteng and NW (clustered);
  • Free State and Northern Cape (clustered);
  • Mpumalanga;
  • Limpopo;
  • Kwa-Zulu Natal
  • Western Cape
  • Eastern Cape

Selection Criteria and Terms and Conditions:

- The delegate must be a woman who owns at least 51% of a construction or construction-related company (preferably in home building) and is actively involved in the running of the business.
- The business must be registered with the NHBRC if it is in the home building sector.
- The business must have been in active operation for at least two consecutive years and have an annual revenue of between R300,000 and R15 million
- The business must have at least 2 full-time employees
- The delegate must commit to attending all days of business training (both online and in contact) support services commitments.
- The delegate must be able to develop a comprehensive business plan for her business at the end of the training to graduate.
- Successful applicants will be required to sign a contract with the NHBRC acknowledging obligation to repay the bursary in full or in part should she leave the programme before completion.
- Failure to commit will render the application invalid.
- All successful applicants are required to agree to the terms and conditions for enrolment into the programme.

Selection process

Shortlisted applicants who meet the selection criteria will be invited for an interview.

Who should attend?

South African previously disadvantaged women entrepreneurs in construction or construction-related sectors (preferably home-building) and actively involved in running the business.



How you will benefit

The programme will seek to assist woman entrepreneurs to develop their entrepreneurial, business and leadership skills through an immersive development programme; and thus help participants to self-actualize and realize their full potential to operate and sustain profitable businesses in the construction sector. The programme will also support participants to network with other women through learning within a community of like-minded woman entrepreneurs.

Additional information

Delivery is blended with some classroom contact sessions and online sessions. Classroom sessions will be delivered in provinces as per the clusters above. Travel and accommodation expenses are for the delegates cost. Please ensure that you have access to a device for online learning and basic computer literacy.
