Managing for Results

Perhaps the greatest leap in a manager’s career is the first one into management. You have to let go of the comfort of being an effective individual contributor and embrace the concept of succeeding through the work of others. These others are dependent on you for direction, coaching, discipline and energy. Their success is your success; and it is your job to ensure that they do not fail.

Introduction

Perhaps the greatest leap in a manager’s career is the first one into management. You have to let go of the comfort of being an effective individual contributor and embrace the concept of succeeding through the work of others. These others are dependent on you for direction, coaching, discipline and energy. Their success is your success; and it is your job to ensure that they do not fail.

This requires a new mindset and the skills of anticipation, preparation, follow-up, influence and, underlying it all, confidence in your own ability to cope and excel. Most importantly the urgency and persistence to achieve results has to come from you!

Making the leap often involves knowing “what’s expected of me?”, “how can I perform at my best?” and of course getting timeous feedback regarding “how am I doing against expectations? so that you may continuously improve your performance. This is especially important in a tough economic environment where skills of resilience and getting the best out of your team in challenging contexts are critical.

Managing for Results is designed to show you how to overcome your toughest challenges.

How you will benefit

Managing for Results offers you a three-day opportunity to explore and understand the practical application of “best practice” at your management level.

You will:

  • Assess your own performance against this benchmark;
  • Apply some tips and tools applicable to your management level; and
  • Create a personal development plan to use your strengths to meet the demands of excellence in your job.

Key focus areas

  • Discover what’s expected of a manager in today’s competitive and opportunity-filled business environment;
  • Learn how to solicit and use timeous feedback to know how you are doing;
  • Unpack how you perform at your best and how to continue performing at your best; and
  • Gain skills, confidence and a ‘can do’ attitude from hands-on practice of the essentials of management.

Who should attend?

Managing for Results is designed for managers who have transitioned into their first full management position.
