Imbokodo

The Imbokodo programme develops managerial prowess in professional women between the ages of 27 and 50 who have achieved some level of decision-making ability in their organisations. The final 80 delegates who are selected to the programme will meet one Wednesday per month throughout 2010 to develop both emotional intelligence and hard business skills in the following ways.

Executive Education

Delegates selected to the Imbokodo programme will take a three-day Executive Education course to further develop business competencies with a focus on strategy and financial management. In May 2009, GIBS was again ranked as one of the top business schools globally by the prestigious UK Financial Times. GIBS was placed in 38th place in the combined rankings. GIBS is the only African business school to be placed in the top 45 business schools worldwide for non-degree executive education programmes - the sixth year running that GIBS has achieved this accolade.

Conversations with extra-ordinary South African businesswomen

Delegates will meet for intimate conversations with extraordinary South African businesswomen. This will provide delegates the opportunity to ask questions and garner advice from these high performing women.

Case study panel debates

Delegates will participate in panel-led discussions that will focus on how to overcome challenges in the workplace. These include: addressing sexual-harassment, work/life balance, ways to retain women in the workplace and the South African context for women. Delegates engage with a panel of South African business elites and their fellow delegates to grapple with these issues.
In order to add to the richness of the debates, this component of the programme is open to interested non-Imbokodo members from the public who would like to attend particular debates that interest them.

Small group coaching sessions

Delegates will meet regularly in small groups lead by a professional executive coach who will lead the group through exercises to develop their professional interpersonal skills. These include: planning, defining a vision, conflict resolution and working toward a vision.

Please note that applications for the 2010 programme have closed. Applications for 2011 will open in August.

The comprehensive programme fee for Imbokodo 2010 is R16 200.

What Imbokodo delegates say about the programme

“Imbokodo has helped me to learn more about business strategies. It has allowed me to talk with other women about dilemmas we face without the fear of retribution we might run into at work. It also gives us a safe space to use the new strategies we learn to lead others as competent managers in an increasingly competitive market.”

“I have been promoted over the last five years to greater responsibility and leadership. I am now in a clear role of leadership and yet have not been given many tools to develop my role. I have been locked into the company for a two-year period in which to grow my opportunities and also to develop those below me. This programme is helping me develop inter-personal communication skills through the small group work and is helping me with strategic planning through the course so I can meet my goals.”

“Through Imbokodo I interact with women who have excelled in their different fields and am able draw strength from their success. It is about each of us bringing a wealth of challenges from our own business environments and finding ways we can support one another to develop to our higher potential. Imbokodo has provided me the opportunity to build a diverse network of women and men who are interested in building better leadership  in South African business.”
