Going the extra mile for students
08 November 2011

Going abroad as part of a South African academic course is usually reserved for a lucky few at university. But at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (Gibs), the University of Pretoria's business school located in Johannesburg, a 10day trip abroad is part of a compulsory global module for MBA students. While other South African business schools also have global modules, GIBS is the only one where the module is compulsory. This year, students visited Brazil, China, India and the east or west coasts of the US as part of the module. Just over 200 final year MBA students visited these destinations last month before completing their final theses which are due this week.

Why employee wellbeing makes good business sense
BUSINESS DAY, Health News 26 Jan 2011 Page 2
Healthy workers improve presenteeism — they work better at work

Healthy, employees cost their companies less. They are at work more often, work better when at work and ultimately have a positive impact on the bottom line AUS-based study on promoting health in the workplace cites up to 90% of medium-sized companies as offering some type of health promotion and disease prevention service to staff.
In the States, wellness at work is firmly entrenched in the collective mindset of corporate America and among legislators. There is also a huge amount of credible data to support the positive effects of workplace wellness. Under recent federal healthcare law, tax incentives and grants are now available to chip away at companies' huge healthcare costs.

However, the South African context is somewhat different. When it comes to wellness at work, we are lagging in terms of both social expectations and the legislation to back them up. The reasons to promote wellbeing in the workplace are abundant. A recent article on employee wellness in the Harvard Business Review cited various companies and studies supporting the value of workplace wellness programmes — for state and employer alike.

In 2010 Discovery, together with Wits University and the Sunday Times launched a national survey called the Health Company Index. Over 100 companies are participating in the survey, ranging from large corporations to medium-sized businesses. Companies may already be spending money on wellness initiatives that are often difficult to measure, and without visible impact. The index is a way to observe what South African companies across the board are doing, and evaluate their initiatives. The intention is in wider collaboration and shared best practice. By sharing ideas and resources with companies on a national level, we can make the workplace a platform to empower and incentivise South Africans to live healthier lives.
